The exhibition A Burnt Landscape held as part of a multi-year research art project dedicated to the restoration of the area of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park affected by the devastating fire in 2022. When we walk through a desolate landscape to which life is "only just" returning, one that is at first glance miserable, sad, we cannot help but think about destruction, meaninglessness or sadness. We expect fright or dizziness. But if we look at the landscape once more, we will see the fertility of the ashes, the activation of mosses, fungi or seeds that were literally waiting for their opportunity. The landscape of the burnt site shows us how far our initial idea is from reality. It has a new structure, aesthetics. It is a place of silence and free thought. A space turned inside out, a scene of things, new beginnings, fear and encouragement. The burnt site is a true metaphor for renewal, a memory pushed into the unconscious. The visual remains are the new scenery, but also the speed of colonization by moss, herbs and especially birch or aspen, but also larch or pine. If we gain a relationship with the rock and the forest, it becomes close, personal.
How does artistic imagination help us in our view of the formation of the landscape?
How can the exploration of a place and joint observation transform perception?
These and other questions are answered by artists who have spent time here. In the form of drawings, paintings, performances, audiovisual works, photographs and installations, it brings different perspectives on the transformation of the landscape after the fire.
